ENTRY #8-December 20, 2011

Hey there, Hi there, Ho there

We should all be happy as can “B

Because -

It’s the most wonderful time of the year.

You better watch out, you better not cry, better not pout, I’m telling you why –

Because –

I like you….

Hi diddle dee, M-O-U-S-E.

Ok – so that was my very weird version of “Announcements” with a Holiday twist, with some not so subtle references.

I just wanted to let you know that after 7 years at the helm, I will be stepping down officially as Scoutmaster in time for next year’s charter renewal.  This was not an easy decision for me, but one which nonetheless I felt I needed to do.  With Anthony and Vincent away at college, though surrounded by friends each week, something is missing.  Perhaps it’s a one little spark of my imagination, perhaps it’s just time to move on.  To be honest, I really haven’t been able to put my finger on it, but I just feel it’s time.  Mr. Berzok will be taking over as Scoutmaster and Mr. Nuzzi and Mr. Endler will be signing on as Assistant Scoutmasters.  Mr. Markel and Mr. Moy will remain ASMs as well, but the “Sundance Kid” - Mr. Larstanna will be moving into a different role as well.  The old and new leadership will always have our support and encouragement.  Together we have all built a terrific program – one which is both recognized and acknowledged in East Brunswick and throughout the District.

There is no other way I would have liked to have spent the last 14 years than with Pack and Troop 223.  I have regained Scouting knowledge I once believed lost, found lifelong friends I thought I would never find and I have accomplished things I never imagined possible.  I hope somewhere along the way I’ve helped each and every one of you reading this.

So thanks for the memories.

I cherish each and every one – and look forward to some new ones.

And I’ll be back again next year – just with a different uniform.

“Happy Birthday!”

Yours (always) in Scouting,

Mr. B

It’s a bird, It’s a plane, it’s a squirrel?

super-squirrel-1.jpg

Biff.jpg  I love superheroes.  I always have.  As a kid I enjoyed sitting for hours at a table drawing my favorite ones.  In college I actually exhibited my work.  Dr. Boshart, my art history professor teased me on how my comics weren’t ‘real’ art.  Wonder what he’s saying now that the Green Lantern, Thor and Captain America all hit the big screen in 2011!  A Marvel purist, I am Spiderman fan although I must admit I’ve watched every 1950’s episode of Superman, repeat after repeat, throughout the 70’s on WPIX.  Despite acquiring a rather cool drawing table when I got married and moved out, I’ve never really set aside, nor found the time to draw again.  The most I’ve accomplished is wood burnings over the years.  I guess that’s why I love telling stories with our Eagle Scouts equating them to cartoon characters.  I hope I have a few more stories to tell.
wham.jpgAll around us there are heroes.  Many don’t don a cape, mask nor tights to be effective in the role.  Sometimes they are readily available.  Other times they need some coaxing or a Bat Signal to bring them out.  Most times though they just need to be asked to save the day.  Well, we need some super-heroes now.  This weekend a few will put on some masks (err, protective goggles), fighting gloves (work gloves) and use their weapons (hammers, saws, levels) to build a Troop storage shed.  The day after Thanksgiving some, even a leader (Flash Larstanna) will run for a cause at Strides for Scouting.  Remember you don’t have to run to assist a hero.  I still can use a few ‘sidekicks’ (who saw Sky High?!) to help me out with this event.    We’re still also in need for some assistance supporting the town’s Adopt-A-Family program.  I’m ringing the Bat Phone for this one, so please some of you, answer the red phone!  With the Holidays just a few weeks away, super hero strength and speed are required for this caper.  And at our 11/29 Troop meeting the “Birdman” will pay us a visit – and he doesn’t even fly.
All the Leaders, Scouts and Volunteers among us are Heroes.  Each has their own special powers.  And as Uncle Ben said – “with great power comes great responsibility.”
Now who’s with me?  Bring on the Bad Guys ! Pow.jpg
And don’t forget Mr B rhymes with Mr Lee (Stan Lee that is) more.
Excelsior!

Vin’s likeness was published in an issue of Amazing Spiderman a few years ago.  He won an essay contest on how people who stay off drugs are heroes.  He are the panels of that comic book with him in them.

Tires and Time and Dimes, Oh My!

tire.jpg

clock.jpg

Last month our Troop banned together to assist some local residents whose homes suffered grave damage from Hurricane Irene.  During that event, Mrs B ran over to ShopRite to get some cardboard boxes which would assist us in moving certain items around during the cleanup.  Almost immediately after receiving a generous donation of boxes, the car she was driving to transport the boxes, my car, got a flat tire.  As she and I traded phone calls to determine her exact location I arrived on the scene roughly fifteen minutes after the flat.   She had settled just off Summerhill Road onto Central.  We switched cars so she could get the boxes back to our Troop volunteers.  There I stood, looking at my Toyota, ready to change my first flat for this vehicle.  I had some problems finding out how to ‘drop’ the spare tire which oddly enough took longer to do so than changing the actual flat.   All in all the process took about 45 minutes between the raindrops.  What I remember most about that task is that at least 75 cars passed me during that span.  Oddly enough, no one stopped, slowed down, even glanced to help.  Not having the legs Mrs B has, I can respect that no one would even attempt to pause for me.  But she had been there for 15 minutes prior to my arrival.  I wondered - how many cars passed her?  How many parents of former or current Scouts drove by during that hour?  How many Eagle Scouts?  The kicker for me which made me start to realize what was happening was when a volunteer fire department vehicle ‘whizzed’ right by me.  When they pulled a U-turn, my heart actually stopped.  When they parked across the street, less than two hundred feet from where my vehicle was disabled and ran into the house because of the rain, I began to laugh.  Only on Labor Day would someone not stop to help a stranger.  Thankfully our Troop was roughly a mile away operating without the same attitude.

Currently we have three active Eagle Scout projects underway.  Hopefully we’ll have another one started within a month.  As our Scouts juggle their schoolwork, extracurricular activities and personal schedules, it is comforting to know that we are all working together to find some spare time to get things done.  That’s what families do.  Help each other, even during the busiest of times.

As a Troop we’ll soon be participating in some events which not only require an investment of time, but some funds as well.  Strides for Scouting will take place the Friday after Thanksgiving.  Similar to last year, the run’s registration fee will cover event costs and left over funds will go to the Scouting program.  That revenue will be used to sponsor boys who would not be able to participate in the program without assistance.  In the weeks prior to Thanksgiving we’ll be supporting Scouting for Food.  This year we hope to combine this event with Jamie’s Eagle Project which is supporting a Helmetta food pantry.  For the past two years I’ve run a NJ FoodBank drop-off station at the Piscataway Panera Bread facility.  Though times are difficult financially for most, I was amazed last year how much people gave in the form of currency. One child brought her piggy back and emptied it all, literally contributing her spare dimes.  We’ll also need assistance supporting the town’s Adopt-A-Family program. This is where we sponsor a family either to some needed items like clothing or toys for kids or even the items for a complete Holiday meal.  As we’ve always done, let’s work together to make these events successful.  For any Scout looking for Leadership, these are excellent opportunities to shine.

So, as we rapidly approach the holiday season, let’s remind each other to be thankful for what we have instead of complaining about what we don’t have.  There are far more people out there with less.

Part of me was glad I got to work off my spare tire as I changed my Toyota’s.
The Scoutmaster in me was disappointed no one could spare time to assist.
It wound up costing me 1,250 not so spare dimes to fix that tire.
Truth be known, I’d gladly spend another $125 to replace the extra spare tire stuck above my hips.

Perseverance

In my last blog, I asked what does “Nike” mean?

Nike is the Greek goddess of victory. According to legend, in the Battle of Marathon, news of the successful battle by the Greeks was sent by messenger back to their home city, 26 miles away. The messenger was so exhausted when he got there that he said one word: "Nike!"(Victory) and then died from dehydration and exertion.

Keeping in theme with the concept of ‘victory’, as we approach the 10th anniversary of one of the most devastating events in our US history, I would like to note that despite how challenging these past ten years have been, as a nation, as a metropolitan area, as a people, we have persevered.

John Quincy Adams said, “Courage and perseverance have a magical talisman, before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish into thin air.”

We can make our problems go away, but we must constantly be aware that they may come back at any time.  As we enter a new program year, our 45th as a unit, be mindful of the challenges you’ve faced, the ones you have overcome and continue to move forward.  But always be cautious of what can come next.  Not paranoid, but careful, using the knowledge you’ve gained from your experiences.

It wasn’t easy for us to drop Vin off at college a few weeks ago.  Having taken almost two years to adjust to Anthony not being around every day, though Lena is still at home with us, it feels strange not having the boys around.  As I thought how long it would take us to adjust, I wondered how Vin must be adjusting, dealing with similar challenges.  For those of you who are Facebook goers, based on Vin’s postings you know how he was dealing with things that first weekend.  And when one posting popped up about him missing his sister, I knew the world had changed – and so had Vin.  Just a few weeks later we read about how doing laundry stinks but how good the food is.  I ignore the postings on parties and attempt to redirect with studies, but alas, it’s still Vin I’m talking about.  Nonetheless, despite his present challenges, he is on his way to persevering.

I am thinking about our first meeting.  I am interested to hear how some events went over the summer. I am excited about what this new program year will bring.  I hope I won’t feel weird standing there without one of my sons present.  I wonder how Fred Beisser led for so many years without a boy in the Troop.  I know that I will be among friends and that they will make this transition easier.

AmericaUnited.bmpOn Sunday, September 11, 2011 we will commemorate the 10th anniversary of “9-11” as a community and Troop family.  Please see if you can attend this important ceremony.  As the Freedom Tower continues to rise, we must never forget why it’s being built.  Ten years ago, the Troop created a badge which every boy and leader wore on their uniform – some for years.  Its original image is within this message.  If there is enough interest, we can reissue this badge.  If you still have yours, please wear it proudly to the ceremony.
We have overcome. We have persevered. Together.

PS.  To the history buffs out there – Skyeler and Trevor.  You now know why Nike shoes branded themselves the way they did.  You now also know why a marathon is 26 miles.  Who said you only learn about knots in Scouting!

*****Any Scout who read this entire post...you can wear Class B to the 9/6/11 meeting.*****

Without Limits

"Physically a man has his limitations, but there is no limit to his soul. His bones may break and his feet may ache, but a true champion never gives up in times of hardship. Strive to improve, strive for your goals, and never fear the unknown. For nothing is unachievable if your heart burns with desire. It is then that you are truly without limits."

-William J. Bowerman

This is Vin’s favorite quote.

It is from the head Track Coach of Oregon State for many years who was by no coincidence the creator of Nike shoes.  Sidebar:  What does “Nike” mean?

I love this quote.  Aside from the fact that it’s Vin’s favorite, it matches my philosophy in life too.  As a kid, my Uncle Al shared with me that his least favorite word in the English language was ‘hate.’  I remember him saying, “We may not like something.  But there is no need for hate in this world.”  I tried to live my life with this understanding.  Aside from ‘hating’ softball umpires occasionally, for the most part, I think I’ve heeded my Uncle’s advice.  I too have a word I “don’t like.”  It’s “Can’t.”  Just writing the word gets me going.  Similar to “hate”, there are so many negative ‘vibes’ associated with “can’t.”  So self defeating is the word, from the get-go.  Over the years, I’ve heard countless times “I can’t tie this knot, it’s too hard.  I can’t hit this pitcher, they’re too fast.  I can’t do Calculus; what’s the point of it anyway?”  Yet when you do tie that knot, hit that pitcher, solve that problem, how good do you feel?  That sense of euphoria comes from achievement.  You accomplished something you felt hesitant over.  By not quitting, you gave yourself a chance.  And a chance more often is all we really need most times. How many times have you heard “You have to be in it, to win it?”  We have to try to succeed.  It must be part of our human nature, our being.

Though there were many times when I felt challenged beyond comprehension at Philmont, I never said I couldn’t do it.  There will be many times in your life when you are challenged to the point of breaking.  Sometimes you’ll want to take the easy way out and quit.  Please don’t.  You WILL regret it at some point in your life.  Our lives are what we choose to make them.  Make the most out of yours by giving your best – all the time, even if doing so is difficult or puts you in the minority.

As Mr. Blutarski aptly said in the 1979 cult classic Animal House - “When the going gets tough, well then….the tough get going!

So go ahead, it’s Ok to be afraid.  But never quit.  “Just do it!”  Hmmm, what a great slogan.  Guess it’s time to bring it back.

Remember, “You have to have confidence in your ability, and then be tough enough to follow through.”

-Rosalyn Carter, Former First Lady

“There is no me in team.”

We’ve all had times in our life when we’ve needed help.
Help can come in the form of guidance, a listening ear, a pair of hands or a shoulder to lean on.
Working together as a team, great things can be accomplished:

Over the past few weekends as a Troop we witnessed the completion of two Eagle Scout projects for Sam and Justin B.

Sunday May 1st two adult leaders, Mr. Markel and Mr. Larstanna, were awarded the Unit Merit Award.

On Saturday May 7th we’ll celebrate together as three friends; Brian, Ishan and Rohan officially receive their Eagle badges.

At the prestigious Penn Relays April 30, the East Brunswick 4x100M relay team finished second in the nation missing first by mere fractions of a second.

On the Cooper River, May 1st, I witnessed 2 novice rowers; Vin and his teammate, strike gold as they worked together, rowing in tandem for over ½ mile.

Too often we think we can do better ‘flying solo’ – even when we know we need help.  Most often, we go at it alone because we are afraid to ask for the help.  Sometimes, though we feel the world’s problems can be solved only by “me, myself and I.”

When the best hitter gets ups with the winning run on third base and their coach tells them to bunt, do they?

When 4 strong rowers think they can row faster individually, against each other and wind up in last place, how fast were they?

When the last runner on a relay team doesn’t finish the race because they’re in last place, does it matter how fast the first 3 runners ran?

Can an Eagle candidate get their project done with even the best of plans, with no help, with no one to lead?

We take things for granted.  It’s plain and simple. We think we know best.  It’s part of our human nature.  However, every now and then, ask for help, lend a hand, work together, simply listen.  Rome wasn’t built in a day.  It wasn’t built alone either.

I am thankful for the support my family provides me to do the things I enjoy; one of them being Scouting.  I have both thankful and appreciative for all of the parents, adult leaders and scouting friends that have made my job as Scoutmaster easier and easier over the years.

As we approach some really cool upcoming scouting events, let’s remain mindful that they can be both fun and successful if we work together.  Don’t leave that menu for one person to plan, shop and cook.  Was that tent you used last put away the way you would want if you received it back?  Don’t rely on Adam to remember everything to bring.  Ask for help.  Better yet, offer to help before it’s requested.

Now who’s ready for an AWESOME State Trooper Camporee?!?

ENTRY #1-March 27, 2011

I had many ideas planned for this, my first entry, but it seems most fitting that I write about someone who gave much to the Scouting movement during his lifetime. You may have seen him at some of our functions, the last of which was Nick and Vin's Eagle Court of Honor. This weekend we lost a member of our Troop family, Nick's grandfather - Mr Ed Webster. Mr Webster was Scoutmaster of Troop 23 and from what I've been told during his tenure, his Troop had a friendly rivalry with 223! I always enjoyed talking scouting with Mr. Webster and it was really a pleasure to see how much joy he had in re-experiencing the program through Nick and Lawrence as they rose to the rank of Eagle. Scoutmaster and father to Eagle Scouts himself, I don't think I'll ever forget the look on his face the day his grandson Lawrence, awarded him with his Eagle mentor pin. I remember thinking how cool it was for a grandfather to have that much impact on his grandson, let alone within the scouting program. For the last 4 years I've seen my own dad, taking his grandson to his weekly scout meetings. Now a "Jr Webelo", I wonder what it will be like for my dad to see my nephew, his grandson, receive his Eagle. And I wonder if I'll ever experience the same as a grandfather some day. Who knows....

Many people have had an impact on my 'career' in scouting. To name a quick few; my father - who was my Assistant Cubmaster, my mom - who was my Den Mother, my sons - who brought me back to scouting and Mr Webster - who made me realize how scouting can and should come full circle in a family. Not to end this blog on a corny note, but "May the Circle of Scouting Life continue amongst all of us now and forever."

Special thanks to Steve, Vin, Rohan and Ishan as they joined Lawrence, Nick and their Uncle Jim to sum 7 Eagle Scouts in attendance at Mr. Webster's Memorial Service. A fitting scout tribute to wonderful person and scout leader.

Yours in Scouting,
Mr B

Softly falls the light of day,
                         While our campfire fades away.
                         Silently each scout should ask:
"Have I done my daily task?
Have I kept my honor bright?
                         Can I guiltless sleep tonight?
Have I done and have I dared
                         Everything to be prepared.?"

                         Listen Lord, oh listen Lord,
As I whisper soft and low,
Bless my Mom and bless my Dad,
There is something they should know.
I have kept my honor bright.
The Oath and Law has been my guide.
Mom and Dad, this you should know,
Deep in my heart I love you so.
